(1906-1973) Born in New York and came from
a family of artist. His brother was cartoonist William Steig. Studied at
College of the City, NY and left to pursue his studies in art at the
National Academy of Design. Known primarily as a silversmith, made
puzzle-like, asymmetrical pieces, exulting in curves. Exhibits include: MoMA
(1946) and Walker Art Center. Works are highly sought out. Paintings of
his are in the permanent collection of the Provincetown Art Assoc. and
Museum. 5A. John Hare:
(1909 - 1978) Well known Provincetown,
Gloucester and St. Augustine. Known as the dean of watercolorist on Cape
Cod, his works have lately become highly coveted. He had exhibited at one
time with the Munson Gallery. Resided in 1939 in St. Augustine and was one
of the Art Club members. He had an incredible gift of painting water/shore
scapes. 6. Josephine Arico Delva:
Student of Henry Hensche. Exhibitions
include this painting at the 20th Century Club, Boston in 1955.
7. Unknown: 8. H. Lee Hirsche:
Williams College professor of art from 1956 to 1985, produced
art in a wide variety of formats, and painted portraits from the late 1960s
and early 1970s Hirsche was known for eye-popping patterns and psychedelic
shading to a photo realist style made popular by Don Eddy, Richard Estes,
and Audrey Flack. All of Hirsche’s work demonstrates skill and
inventiveness, but the portraits capture a particularly brilliant moment in

Central Art Gallery, Boston Guild of Artists. Exhibits include: PAFA
(1929-30, 1932), NAD (1930-Hallgarten prize), Corcoran Gallery biennials
1928-37 (5 exhibits), AIC, PAAM, Mint. Mus. Art, Jordan Marsh, Boston,
Evanston AA, Oklahoma AA. Works at Chrysler Collection, Harvard Club,
NY, Oklahoma Museum, Mint. Mus. Art, and others. Also painted numerous
landscapes, still-lifes and portraits in Louisiana. Extremely well listed
artist. His birth date, although proof showing he was born in 1899, he
wished it known that he was born in 1901 and that is what is on his grave
stone in Truro.

Gallery in Greenfield, MA. Studied: Cape Cod School of Art with Hilda Neily,
Rob Longley an Carol Whorf Westcott and in Italy (2001). Plein aire

(1903 - 1992) Provincetown's premier
photographer. The Smithsonian considered him one of America's finest
pictorial photographers. Studied at Art Student's League of New York and
with distinguished artist John Sloan.

meditative. Brooks’ work suggests the influence of impressionism, realism
and surrealism combined with his own sense of composition and balance, as
well as daring color and a deliberate brush stroke, to create a unique,

40. James Hansen:
(1951-1997) James Hansen came to
Provincetown in the early 1980s and worked for several summers in a studio
at the Fine Arts Work Center. During his years in Provincetown, he
befriended many local artists, including sculptor Paul Bowen, and painters
Claude Simard and Myriam Laplante. James died in 1997 at the age of 45. An
instructor at Yale and Brandeis, he exhibited at the Institute of
Contemporary Art in Boston, the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City, the
Alpha Gallery in Boston, the UFO and East End galleries in Provincetown, the
Eva Cohen Gallery in Chicago and in numerous other locations across the U.S.
His work is in permanent collections of the Boston Public Library, the
Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University,
Cantor Art Gallery, Boston, Portland State Univ. and others. He is the
recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant and a fellowship from
the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities.

death in 1989, Mary Hackett has been described by Philip Hamburger in The
New Yorker (September 9, 1996) as "a painter fools might label 'primitive'
but whom those with eyes to see recognize as great."
