Biography:
(1890 -
1961) Strong affiliation with Provincetown and Massachusetts.
Exhibited at PAAM and is in their permanent collection. Often known for
his marine renderings. As time has passed with each auction, I have
been able to gather more information about him. He had a gallery named
the Edel Gallery in Provincetown in the 1960's. Was a predominant
etcher. Each auction, the prices are going up.

Cook's Traditional Portuguese Recipes from Provincetown. Was a long time
teacher, poet and sometime painter. Instrumental in the Provincetown

Building.

the dean of watercolorist on Cape Cod, his works have lately become
highly coveted. He had exhibited at one time with the Munson Gallery.
Resided in 1939 in St. Augustine and was one of the Art Club members. He
had an incredible gift of painting water/shore scapes.

Lot 32 Vechten, Carl Van
Biography:
(1880 – 1964) was an American writer and photographer who was a patron
of the Harlem Renaissance and the literary executor of Gertrude Stein.
Studied at University of Chicago (1903). Moved to NY in 1906, worked for
NY Times. Became first American critic of modern dance. At that time,
Isadora Duncan, Anna Pavlova, and Loie Fuller were performing in New
York City. Several books of his essays on music and literature published
between 1915 and 1920. From 1922 and 1930 Knopf published seven novels
by Van Vechten, starting with Peter Whiffle: His Life and Works and
ending with Parties. Also wrote controversial novel Nigger Heaven
(published in 1926). An essay of his entitled "Negro Blues Singers" was
published in Vanity Fair in 1926. In 1930s, began taking portrait
photographs including Gertrude Stein, Anna May Wong, Jane Bowles,
Mahalia Jackson, W. Somerset Maugham, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bessie Smith,
Paul Cadmus, Marc Chagall, Horst P. Horst, Georgia O'Keeffe, Gore Vidal,
Sidney Lumet, James Stewart, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles, Norman Mailer,
Evelyn Waugh, Adele Addison, Erskine Caldwell, Ella Fitzgerald, Alfred
Stieglitz, Truman Capote, Billie Holiday, Lin Yutang, Cesar Romero,
Tallulah Bankhead and Sir Laurence Olivier. He met Gertrude Stein in
Paris in 1913. She appointed Van Vechten her literary executor; he
helped to bring into print her unpublished writings. Was the subject of
a 1968 biography by Bruce Kellner, Carl Van Vechten and the Irreverent
Decades. Most of Van Vechten's papers are held by the Beinecke Library
at Yale University. The Library of Congress acquired its collection of
approximately 1,400 photographs in 1966 from Saul Mauriber.

Biography:
(1870-1929)
Largely self-taught. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1899. Progress
Expo, Ct. 1927. He came to New York in 1891 penniless and painted snuff
box tops and such. Listed in AskArt and Who's Who, but never sold in
gallery or dealer. Fox Movietone made a short movie of Diehl painting
and talking in Provincetown.
