Biography:
  (1824-1909) Emigrated to NYC in 1850.  Also lived in Boston (from 1856 on)  Worked for Currier & Ives.  Nathaniel Currier owned a lithographic firm in New York.  He took on a partner named James M. Ives, forming the firm called "Currier & Ives".  They would employ many artists and became known as the largest supplier of lithographs in America.

Seyffert, Art Students League, NYC; with Jose DeCreeft, NY; eight summers (one year straight through the following summer) with Henry Hensche, Cape Cod School of Art. Also with Tom Lovell and Cleve Woodward (incidentally Mr. Woodward was the portrait/figure monitor for Charles W. Hawthorne’s summer classes at the Cape Cod School of Art.  Also with Cedric and Jeanette Egeli of Edgewater, Maryland.  For the last two years he has participated in the January  portrait workshop for advanced studies, held in Maryland, and has also participated in a two week summer course for outdoor portrait/figure classes offered at Cape Cod.  Memberships include: National Arts Club of New York City, Pastel Society of America, Society of American Impressionists, the Art Students League of  N.Y., and the International Society of Marine Painters.  The artist founded American Art Productions to expand an understanding of color as the essential element of impressionist painting. Countless exhibitions and collections include: Dr. Cornelius Vermeule, Curator of Classical Painting and Museum Curator at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts.  Since then other commissions have followed and his painting are now included in corporations, public institutions, and private collections both in the U.S. and abroad.

Lot 70:  Hansen, James
Biography:
  (1951-1997) James Hansen came to Provincetown in the early 1980s and worked for several summers in a studio at the Fine Arts Work Center. During his years in Provincetown, he befriended many local artists, including sculptor Paul Bowen, and painters Claude Simard and Myriam Laplante. James died in 1997 at the age of 45. An instructor at Yale and Brandeis, he exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City, the Alpha Gallery in Boston, the UFO and East End galleries in Provincetown, the Eva Cohen Gallery in Chicago and in numerous other locations across the U.S. His work is in permanent collections of the Boston Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University,  Cantor Art Gallery, Boston, Portland State Univ. and others. He is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts grant and a fellowship from the Massachusetts Council on the Arts and Humanities.
