James Hansen: (1951-1997) James Hansen
came to Provincetown in the early 1980s and worked for several
summers in a studio at the Fine Arts Work Center. During his years
in Provincetown, he befriended many local artists, including
sculptor Paul Bowen, and painters Claude Simard and Myriam Laplante.
James died in 1997 at the age of 45. An instructor at Yale and
Brandeis, he exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in
Boston, the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City, the Alpha
Gallery in Boston, the UFO and East End galleries in Provincetown,
the Eva Cohen Gallery in Chicago and in numerous other locations
across the U.S. His work is in permanent collections of the Boston
Public Library, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Rose Art
Museum at Brandeis University, Cantor Art Gallery, Boston, Portland
State Univ. and others. He is the recipient of a National Endowment
for the Arts grant and a fellowship from the Massachusetts Council
on the Arts and Humanities.

Nancy Whorf: (born 1930) Represented by
the Berta Walker Gallery, daughter of John Whorf. At the age of 14,
Nancy Whorf began her formal art study as a folk artist decorating
furniture for Peter Hunt and for twenty years owned a shop in
Wellfleet that sold her painted furniture. Yet, early on she wanted
to explore her own painting more deeply and spent a year at the
Boston Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where she studied
with Karl Zerbe. The influence of Charles Hawthorne can be felt from
her studies with Vollian Ran and her father John Whorf, both former
Hawthorne students. Since the late 80's, Whorf has focused
exclusively on her painting. Her work has been exhibited extensively
throughout the country and she has received numerous commissions
from public and private organizations such as Lincoln Park

* I have taken apart this work. The first
thing I discovered was a Christie's Auction House label on the back.
On uncovering the photocopy from the matting, there was an
inscription stating that this was a photocopy of the original taken
in 1982. This was dated 1987. I am NOT familiar with
Helmut Newton's signature to verify it is his signature but he was
living at the time of the dating of this photocopy. Also the
inscription is in French (I think). Please check out the
additional images below on this lot.
