Lot 44
Baxter,
Biography:
(born 1947) Studied
at Philadelphia College of Art (’64-’68), Massachusetts College of Art
(’78-’80) and at Boston University (’80-’82). Baxter first began
working with broken ceramic tiles. His mosaic studio began operation in
1991 and he has completed an extensive body of work since then. Baxter
is a classicist working with the traditional and low-tech mediums of
oil-painting and ceramic-mosaic. And his ongoing pursuit has been an
exploration of how simple characteristics in painting and mosaic – such
as texture and fragmentation – can combine to become arresting images.
Baxter believes that making an artwork is similar to a controlled
laboratory experiment with observed protocols determining the result of
the process. To this, a level of technical difficulty is established at
the beginning that affects the degree of visual interest in the end.
Historical influences on Baxter’s development as an artist are diverse
including Vermeer and Watteau and Monet; and – closer to home –
extending to Yves Klein, Marcel Broodthaers and Jasper Johns.

Whorf, Nancy
Biography:
(1930-2009)
Represented by the Berta Walker Gallery, daughter of John Whorf. At the
age of 14, Nancy Whorf began her formal art study as a folk artist
decorating furniture for Peter Hunt and for twenty years owned a shop in
Wellfleet that sold her painted furniture. Yet, early on she wanted to
explore her own painting more deeply and spent a year at the Boston
Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where she studied with Karl
Zerbe. The influence of Charles Hawthorne can be felt from her studies
with Vollian Ran and her father John Whorf, both former Hawthorne
students. Since the late 80's, Whorf has focused exclusively on her
painting. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the country
and she has received numerous commissions from public and private
organizations such as Lincoln Park Zoological Society, Tiffany's in
Chicago, Abby Rockefeller. Works also at PAAM and the Town of
Provincetown.
