Artist: Unknown
Auctioneer's Note
This painting was
probably painted sometime in the 1940's, possibly earlier. As to
the possible artist, several
people have their own ideas, me included. Whoever the artist is,
it was most definitely painted in Provincetown on Commercial Street. The architecture
precludes it without a doubt. Your examination of hair styles,
shoes, clothing and actions will lead you to your own conclusions.
I have included several images for your benefit. The impeccable
detail on each shell painted around the frame is a work of art in
itself. Amazing that this painting was not signed. Seeing it
in person is well worth the trip. Terry

Artist: Whorf, Nancy
Biography: (born 1930) Represented by the Berta Walker Gallery, daughter
of John Whorf. At the age of 14, Nancy Whorf began her formal art study
as a folk artist decorating furniture for Peter Hunt and for twenty
years owned a shop in Wellfleet that sold her painted furniture. Yet,
early on she wanted to explore her own painting more deeply and spent a
year at the Boston Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where she
studied with Karl Zerbe. The influence of Charles Hawthorne can be felt
from her studies with Vollian Ran and her father John Whorf, both former
Hawthorne students. Since the late 80's, Whorf has focused exclusively
on her painting. Her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the
country and she has received numerous commissions from public and
private organizations such as Lincoln Park Zoological Society, Tiffany's
in Chicago, Abby Rockefeller. Works also at PAAM and the Town of
Provincetown.

Artist: Helgason, E.
Biography: In 2001, the Harriman Alaska Expedition was retraced. In
that, a man named Kes Woodward was on a special mission in Chignik. When
writing Painting in the North for the Anchorage Museum of History and
Art in 1993, he encountered several paintings from Chignik by someone
named E. Helgason. At the time he was unable to find out anything about
the artist who appears not to have been part of the art establishment.
In Chignik Kes made some general inquiries and was soon directed to an
Arthur Skonberg who grew up here and who remembered Helgason as an
affable pile-driver operator and inventor who lived in Chignik Lagoon in
the 1930's and 40's. Mr. Helgason left Chignik for Australia and was
never heard from again.
